If you search for “sourcing agent Nigeria” or just “sourcing agent”, you will find very different things: agents who buy goods in China for importers, agents who buy farm produce for export, and recruitment firms that source job candidates. This guide is about the first kind: the agent who buys goods abroad for a Nigerian buyer.
We also explain the part that confuses most importers. A sourcing agent is not a shipping company, and neither is the same as a clearing agent. For a closer look at this split, see our guide on procurement agent vs shipping company. Knowing who does what helps you ask the right questions and avoid paying the wrong person for the wrong job.
Quick answer: A sourcing agent in Nigeria finds suppliers abroad, negotiates, buys goods on your behalf, checks quality and hands the goods over for shipping. They do not usually move the goods or clear them at the port. That is the job of a shipping company or freight forwarder and a clearing agent.

What is a sourcing agent in Nigeria?
The term is used loosely. In Nigeria you will meet it in three ways:
- Import sourcing: buying goods from China, Turkey, Dubai and elsewhere for Nigerian buyers. This is what this guide covers. Many people also call this a procurement agent or an importation agent.
- Export sourcing: buying Nigerian commodities, such as farm produce, for foreign buyers.
- Recruitment sourcing: finding and screening job candidates for employers.
When an importer says “sourcing agent”, they usually mean an agent who is their eyes and ears in the market where the goods are made.
What a sourcing agent does
The exact service differs between agents, so always ask for the list in writing. Most import sourcing agents cover these tasks:
- Understand what you need: product, specification, quantity and budget.
- Find suppliers: compare options instead of relying on one quote.
- Negotiate: price, order terms and lead time with the supplier.
- Check quality and specifications: confirm that what is being bought matches what you asked for.
- Place and follow up the order: including dealing with the language and with local payment methods.
- Hand over for shipping: to your shipping company, or to one the agent arranges.

What a sourcing agent does not do
This is where most misunderstandings start. A sourcing agent normally does not:
- Move the goods across the sea or by air. That is the shipping company or freight forwarder.
- Clear the goods in Nigeria. Clearing at the port is done by a clearing agent, often the same company as the shipping company.
- Guarantee clearing costs or exact arrival dates. Port charges and processes change, and shipping times are estimates counted from the day goods ship.
Some companies offer all of it under one name. That is fine, as long as you know which services are included and who is responsible at each stage.
Sourcing agent vs freight forwarder vs clearing agent
| Sourcing (procurement) agent | Freight forwarder / shipping company | Clearing agent | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main job | Finds, buys and checks goods | Moves goods by sea or air | Clears goods through customs in Nigeria |
| Where they work | Mostly where goods are made | Between the origin and Nigeria | At the Nigerian port or airport |
| Responsible for | Sourcing, negotiation, checks and hand-over | Goods in transit | Customs paperwork and release |
| Ask them | Scope, fees, proof of checks | Timelines, what is insured, tracking | Documents needed, charges, who pays duties |
What each person charges and what is included varies, so ask each one for a written estimate. For rules on registration of freight forwarders in Nigeria, ask whether the company is registered with the regulator, the Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN), and keep a copy of their details.

When it makes sense to use a sourcing agent
An agent is most useful when:
- You do not speak the supplier’s language or know the market.
- You are buying in bulk and a mistake would be expensive.
- You want someone to compare suppliers and check goods before they ship.
- You buy regularly and want one team to handle it.
Buying directly can make sense when you already know the supplier, the goods are simple, and you are comfortable handling the payment and quality risk yourself. Either way, verify before you pay. Our guide on how to find a reliable China agent in Nigeria lists the checks.
How Hind Procurement Services works
We are a procurement company, not a shipping company. Here is what that means in practice:
- We source in China, Turkey and Dubai: heavy machinery, equipment, furniture and fashion items. We also source heavy trucks; see our heavy truck procurement page.
- We check quality and specifications before hand-over.
- We hand over your goods to your chosen shipping company, or to one we assign. Once the shipping company confirms receipt, it is responsible for the goods in transit, and we keep following up until delivery.
- We work in bulk. Small or shared orders are not accepted unless an offer says otherwise.
- Timelines: sea freight takes about 60 to 72 days and air freight about 7 to 14 days, counted from the day goods ship. Sourcing and inspection time is extra.
- You can verify us: Hind Importation Brand Limited, RC 7173495, with offices in Abeokuta and Guangzhou. Search the RC number on the CAC public search. Read the full picture on our China importation agent page and our Terms and Conditions.
Frequently asked questions
Is a sourcing agent the same as a procurement agent?
In most cases, yes. In Nigerian import trade, “sourcing agent” and “procurement agent” usually describe the same work: finding suppliers abroad, negotiating, buying on your behalf, checking quality, and handing goods over to a shipping company. Confirm the exact services included before you pay, since providers use the two titles interchangeably.
Does a sourcing agent ship my goods?
Not usually. A sourcing agent hands the goods over to a shipping company. Some companies offer both services, so ask who is responsible for the goods at each stage.
Who clears my goods at the port in Nigeria?
A clearing agent does, and this is often the shipping company or a company it works with. Ask who is responsible, which documents are needed and what the charges are, in writing.
How is a sourcing agent paid?
It varies: a percentage, a flat fee, or a margin built into the price. Ask how the agent is paid and whether inspections, communication or follow-ups cost extra.
Can a sourcing agent guarantee delivery dates or clearing costs?
No. Clearing charges can change, and shipping times are estimates counted from the day goods ship. Treat any fixed guarantee with caution and ask for estimates in writing.
